Judith HeartSong

Judith Olivia HeartSong is a professional artist of more than twenty-five years with a penchant for exuberant color. As a painter she creates splashy watercolors featuring abstracted women and acrylics of bold, iconic flowers. There is a seamless flow from one beautiful thing to another in her work with a dreamlike quality that delights.

An exploration of mixed media began with a course at the Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, Florida, and since then mixed media additions tend to find their way into the paintings the artist creates. Mixed media boxes incorporate words, images, and found objects housed in shadowbox forms; and most recently Artsy Mirrors and Boxes are painted and sometimes decoupaged before dozens of beautiful handmade and lampwork beads are added using solid brass nails. The beads are collected here, there, and everywhere during the artist’s travels.

The Artsy Mirrors and Artsy Boxes are an additional project in the studio while paint is drying and ideas are percolating. Busy hands are never idle for long. With an ever-changing collection of beads, Milagros from Mexico, sequins, and other decorative items, no two mirrors are alike, and each is a creative adventure. The Artsy Mirrors and Artsy Boxes are currently for sale in several galleries and shops in Maryland, DC, Delaware, and Cape May, New Jersey.

The artist has work in numerous public and private collections including the Permanent Collection of Orlando International Airport in Orlando, Florida. A painting was presented to First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton at the Inauguration in 1993, and she painted a large mural at the National Zoo in 2003. Most recently Princess Cruise Lines has made arrangements to distribute signed limited edition prints of her work on their cruise ships beginning in 2008.

B. J. Wright

BJ Wright studied art briefly in the mid 1970's. In 1998, a trip to Ireland with her daughter reawakened the desire to paint landscapes. Since then she has painted from her own photographs and imagined landscapes. In 2005, a plein air workshop whetted her appetite for the experience of painting outdoors, which has become her passion. Her artworks are in collections in Ireland and in the Southeastern USA.

I’m often asked what I like about painting, especially my most favorite medium, whether it is oil, acrylic, or watercolor. Asking me this is quite like asking what type of candy I prefer in a box of chocolates. They’re all fabulous, as are all the materials I’ve used in creating the hundreds of paintings over a career spanning forty years. What matters most is that I am painting. Those of us that enjoy our visual world need a way of recording it. Whether you take vacation photos or just a picture of those exquisite tulips you grew last spring, you can understand how important it is to have a memory of it. It’s that way with painting. I must record the beauty I see in order to remember it myself and to have others remember it, too.

One painting teacher I had in graduate school told me to keep painting, no matter what. Her philosophy said it all. She believed that painting was more than the application of paint to surfaces. It was a pure process by which we encourage ourselves to carefully examine our surroundings, reflect on what we see, and leave lasting images for those that follow. Most notably, she believed that we ought to enjoy and value the painting process by which we grow as individuals each time we pick up the brush.

Roxanne Vise

My paintings express my sense of wonder of the natural world. More than just an abstract view of objects, I explore individual beauty and the divine connection to all things. Using layer upon layer, sometimes adding, then scraping away - building texture and depth to draw the viewer into the moment of viewing - to expand the experience - to bring a sense of calm before moving on to buy groceries.

Serena Lewis

Hi there! I was first introduced to art over fourteen years ago when I took some basic lessons in Folk Art techniques. While this was only available to me for a very short time, it did ignite a passion for painting that I have enjoyed ever since. I am basically self-taught and I love the challenge of trying to achieve a sense of realism in my art. I was approached to teach art classes over three years ago and I currently teach two mornings a week. It's very rewarding for me to see the look of pride on my student's faces when they complete a new painting. I work with acrylics and, in 2007, I plan to focus my art more on wildlife and domestic animals though I do paint other subjects also. My Blog is a place for me to share my continuing journey through art as well as my personal musings about various topics. I invite you to pop in for a visit anytime and share part of that journey with me. You are always welcome.

Lisa Call

Lisa Call is an artist working in fiber who creates bold geometric quilts that are composed of her richly colored hand dyed fabric. Her work is abstract but draws elements from many places: her love of the colors and geological forms of the southwest, her interest in human-made structures for containment such as fences and stone walls, and her exploration of her own internal psychological walls and boundaries.

Lisa's award winning work has been shown in exhibits throughout the United States and in Europe including Craft Forms at the Wayne Art Center, National Crafts, Quilt National, and Layers of Meaning: The Art Quilt 2005 at the Contemporary Crafts Museum in Portland, Oregon. Her piece, Structures #11, was selected for the cover of the Quilt National 2003 catalog.

A self taught artist, Lisa began making one of a kind contemporary quilts in 1993. In 1997 she founded The Fiber Connection, a successful online artist support group. She received a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin - Madison (1987) and a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley (1985). She was born in Tucson, Arizona in 1963. Having grown up in New Mexico she returned to the southwest in 1994 and settled in the Denver, Colorado area.

Simon Collins

The prolific urban abundance of species like the Ibis (AVIAN show 2006) are symptomatic of human interaction or impact through drought, global warming, scavenging etc. Similar awarenesses are a catalyst for continuing urban observational subject matter.

Simon's work is primarily observational. His solo show AVIAN 2006, consisted of a collection of oil paintings observing a few bird species of urban domestic Sydney, their persona and their unshakable human interactions that affect their very existence. Of interest are the incarcerated, the scavenging and the streetwise.

Key to the choice of subject matter for AVIAN were observations and experiences that go hand-in-hand with having a young family, such as snap-shotting and zoo, beach and park trips.

A graduate of Sydney College of the Arts, Simon is constantly painting and religiously participates in a weekly life drawing group.

Linda Hiller

I am a self-represented artist working out of my studio in my home. Although I’m self taught I have taken workshops and studied with many nationally known artists so I guess you could call it more like selective education. My medium of choice is pastel with oil being a close second. I teach pastel classes at a local junior college and participate in several artist organizations in the surrounding area.

Rene Plein Air

Born in The Netherlands (1964) I am a self-educated painter. Although I studied house-painting, commercial painting and advertising my main interest has always been in fine art.

I began my career as an artist after completing military service, firstly by painting abstract work of the surrounding landscapes where I live. These were begun with sketches in Indian ink on paper and later translated into large paintings (35" x 50") in my studio. During this period my work was shown in a number of galleries, town halls, libraries and other venues in The Netherlands and Germany. Further initiatives resulted in exhibition opportunities with other artists in my own neighbourhood.

In 2004 I discovered the delights of real 'plein-air' painting and became addicted at once! This has become my main area of interest for the time being.

Angela Ferreira

Angela Ferreira is a Portuguese artist established in Cardiff, Wales. From an early age, she has loved to travel. Many of the countries she has experienced have had a strong influence on her works. But she says it is the green valleys and the magical atmosphere of Wales in particular that inspire her to create ever more fantastic paintings of dream-like 'wonderlands'. It is through these imaginative paintings that she expresses her journeys within distant lands and exotic cultures, with a little bit of
surrealism mixed in.

Angela has lived and studied in the USA where she won a School Art Award for outstanding achievement and her work is being published in the next Spring Issue 2007 of National Geographic School books across USA.

Angela's paintings seem to be telling a story, a fairytale... Her goal is to bring cultures together, transmit good inner feelings, positive energy and to take your eyes on a journey to a different imaginative world.

Artist Statement:

"The subconscious reflects on my paintings about life at the moment, my fears, my desires, my hidden thoughts. I get surprised with the outcome sometimes, it strikes me and it is beyond my explanation!"

June Parrish Cookson

From an early age, while traveling and living in various places, I spent a majority of my time beach combing and exploring the countryside. These formative years of observation instilled a passion to capture the natural world through my art.

While attending college in Southern California, my first artistic job was cartoonist for the campus newspaper. After moving to the Pacific Northwest I worked in the graphic arts field including freelance illustrator for major publishing companies. Eventually, inspired by the impressionist style, I produced landscape paintings for private collectors, public corporations, and galleries.

In the intervening years, I partnered with my husband and formed a decorative painting business. The job entailed designing and painting large-scale murals for businesses and residential homes. During this venture, my goals turned toward writing and illustration for children's books.

Working from my studio in the Pacific Northwest as a dedicated fine art painter for more than twenty-five years, I now find myself at a crossroads. Until recently, paintings produced in 2006 dealt with the play of light and shadow on the regional landscape. References originated from travels and personal photographs, while technique employed simplistic compositions through the use of acrylic. As a result, the subject both emphasized remoteness and introduced tranquility.

Following on from this my focus generated a different perspective. A new body of work going beyond previous formulas and, in its place, exploration into the imaginary. Dreams and memory create settings that transmit intimate details of people's everyday lives. Using casein color, my process develops through intricate layers of brushstrokes. On closer inspection, there exists on the surface a subtle nuance similar to pastel. With this artistic endeavor the viewer is offered a few moments of contemplation in an otherwise fast pace world.

Another exciting development can be followed on my new blog Ink Vanilla where I will be creating drawings in my moleskine books. So nowadays I am enjoying both artistic endeavors . . . fine art painting and illustration work.

Tracy Helgeson

I grew up in Rochester Minnesota, and when it came time to apply for college, I knew that art school was the place for me. I attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design for two years and then studied illustration at the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) although I always felt as if I wanted to be a painter and exhibit my work. After college I did a number of different things, working as a graphic designer, illustrator and product designer. When my husband and I had our first baby, I decided to put art aside for awhile and focus on being a stay at home mom, which I did for about 10 years.

When the youngest of our four children went off to school three years ago, I began to paint again and am now basically painting full time. Despite having never painted landscapes, I have been greatly inspired by the land around our home in upstate NY and so for now, I mainly paint landscapes, barns and houses.

My work can be seen in galleries in Williamstown, MA, New York City, Hudson, Roxbury, Cooperstown, Saratoga Springs, NY, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Cape Cod.
