Jan Blencowe

Jan Blencowe recieved her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, magna cum laude, from Caldwell College, Caldwell New Jersey in 1984. During those years summer trips to the artists colony on Monhegan Island in Maine galvanized in her a distinct love for outdoor landscape painting known as painting "en plein air", a French phrase meaning "in the open air".

After moving to Connecticut and raising her children the beauty and diversity of the coastal Connecticut landscape became the focus of her work fuelled by her love of nature and desire for wild places and spaces to be preserved. Jan's primary medium is oils, and occassionally pastels.

Recent awards include two of her plein air landscapes being chosen to represent the state of Connecticut in Paint Americas Top 100 Landscape competition, that collection will be touring the USA during 2007, and an honorable mention at the prestigeous Renaissance in Pastel Show held at the Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich Connecticut.

Jan is a signature member of The Society of American Landscape Painters, and a member of the American Impressionist Society and the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society. Her work is represented by several leading galleries in Connecticut, and is in numerous private collections in the northeast. Jan is also part of the "Daily Painters" movement, her daily paintings can be seen at www.paintingadayproject.blogspot.com. Her "painting a day" project has been written about in Domino Magazine, USA Weekend , the New York Times, the Washington Post Express and at Mastercard's blog Priceless.com.

Artists Statement:

I love being outdoors and so painting outdoors "en plein air' is a natural for me. There's a special something, a raw truthfulness and energy that infuses a work created through a direct encounter with the subject. Working out doors requires one to work quickly and with confidence. Every brushstroke must be meaningful. The sun will have moved across the sky far enough in just two hours to significantly change light and color. My work is usually done "alla prima" a painter's term from an Italian phrase which loosely translated means "all at the first" or "all at once". So my works, even the larger plein air pieces I'm beginniing to do, are painted in one session. It is also my hope that my paintings of the landscape will help remind people that our wild open spaces are vital to our existence and are worthy of our care and preservation.

Susan Borgas

As a child I lived in the Pastoral Regions of the Gawler Ranges. As station life meant creating my own entertainment, I spent much of my time doing what I loved most - drawing. At the beginning of my high school years I moved to Quorn in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia to live with my grandparents. Even though I had visited my grandparents in the past, this was the beginning of a new era, where I would remain living in the Flinders Ranges. I spent one year with my grandparents before moving with my family to Black Rock and eventually Orroroo.

I stayed at Orroroo until I married in 1976, moving onto my husband's family farming property near Booleroo Centre. We still live there to this day. We have three children who are in the workforce. Life was pretty busy on the farm, bringing up a family and the ensuing commitments. It wasn't until 1992 that I seriously considered taking up painting.

Through workshops with numerous artists, books, videos and a very patient art teacher who spent months showing me how to mix any colour that I desired, my own style evolved so that viewers who knew my work recognised it as mine. While I usually paint landscape pictures in oils, I do like to paint with pastels and watercolours. I have also painted still life, which I enjoy immensely. I also paint mostly from photographs and prefer that it is my own or that I know the area well. I will only paint from a photograph of someone else's if they have taken it themselves and wish me to interpret it on canvas.

Whether I'm painting from life, a photograph or a mental image, my paintings do have realistic qualities. While I admire the freshness that other styles of art offer, I will always be drawn to the challenge that realism offers. For me as an artist, learning will never stop. My style will continue to evolve because of the urge to try out new ideas.

The Flinders Ranges would have to be one of my favourite places to paint. The diversity of colour from one season to another is inspiring. There are a huge variety of scenes on offer, from flat plains to rugged mountains. Not forgetting all those wonderfully-aged Australian eucalyptus trees. One does not have to be an artist to enjoy the Flinders Ranges but when you are, the motivation to paint is exciting!

As to my future as an artist, there will always be a scene to paint and something new to learn. I would like to spend more time with my fellow artists as a member with the Painters of the Flinders Ranges. There will be a wealth of knowledge to learn from each other. It can only improve me as an artist.

Piper Ballou

I was born and raised in Long Beach, California but have called Arizona home for the last thirty years. I have been painting seriously for the last two and a half years but have always favored my creative side. Although I participate in various classes and workshops I consider myself self-taught.

Pastels are my medium of choice. I enjoy painting animals and the Southwestern theme. I did not set out to paint animals, they called to me and as I paint them I feel a kinship and oneness as one of the travellers passing through this time on earth. I also enjoy painting still lifes. I like to play with light and color on an object.

Delilah

From Private Banker to Private Art Collections

Investment Specialist Delilah Smith says, " The challenge of maximizing return on principal will never compare to mixing the correct pigments in order to evoke my feelings on canvas. Color is not enough, I need to connect to the hearts of those who view my paintings. I am a passionate painter of color and emotions. My former work as an Investment Specialist refined the discipline I need to work with fiery colors and passionate brush work."

In 2005 Delilah decided to choose her dreams and become the artist she had so desperately wanted to be since her college days. There is something sobering when one day you look up and realize your life is slipping away, vanishing, and you are no closer to your dreams then you were in 1976. Few would leave a successful business to pursue a passion. Few are like Delilah who has soared to the top in all that she has put her mind to.

More than technique or design, it is color that makes a Delilah step off the wall into the hearts of the viewer. Delilah says of her paintings, " Color is the language that speaks to everyone. I use color in my conversations with the canvas. Some conversations are like shooting matches and some are tranquil and serene. Michigan is the home of Delilah. It is the need to make art and find her voice that drives her; a voice that will let you listen with your eyes. To own a Delilah is to own part of her exceptional drive and desire to be the best that she can be each and every time she steps up to the easel. Talent linked with passion is the magic that you will discover in a Delilah.

I document the fragility of nature. When the fascinating specimen I have drawn has long frozen to the ground, or flown across distant fields, my drawing of it remains…fresh and vibrant for continued study and enjoyment. I paint highly detailed renderings of plants, flowers and natural science subjects, drawn to scale, colors mixed and matched to the exacting standards of the strict art form.

I begin by staring. I carefully study the specimen to become familiar with it, turning it slowly to capture its best angle and its most typical features. Before putting pencil to paper, I make note of the time of day and then prepare for a long-term relationship with the fascinating specimen at hand. I draw slowly. Paint cautiously. My preferred mediums are gouache, acrylic and wax-based colored pencil ..…. mediums ideally suited for the slow layering of transparent color over color. Many artists contemplate if a piece is ever finished? For me it is easy. A piece is done when it looks exactly like the specimen.

My entry into this odd niche was whilw field-sketching insects and flowers in a dry, dusty neighborhood nature center. Staff naturalists asked if I would document some of its collection. I agreed and they trained me to do so with the exacting standards required for research. At the time, I was a surface design major at UCLA. I graduated college and spent the next 20 years as a textile designer specializing in complex floral botanical patterns. The attention to detail demanded from those weekends at the nature study center, made my floral design work in the fashion industry some of the most successful.

I now find myself, lecturing, selling, exhibiting, and teaching workshops in all aspects of the art form. How could I have known then, that the summers of my youth, spent volunteering at a dusty little neighborhood nature park, would prepare me for my true passion and life’s work? Botanical Art and Natural Science Illustration.

Cynthia Padilla, is sought out nationally for research projects, book reviews, lectures and as a travel leader on sketching tours.

Jude Maceren

My name is Jude Maceren and I am a published artist residing at New Jersey, USA. I have two studio locations, one in New Jersey, USA and the other in Costa Rica, where I express my creativity.

Creating fine art work is my passion. At this point of my career I have an opportunity to express myself freely through painting inspired by the beauty of nature. I like to paint the joy and the love that creation radiates to men. Because of this I believe that there is a never ending exchange of love between these two which I want to show in the form of a painting.

At this time of my life as an artist I have created series of exotic flowers done traditionally in watercolor, acrylic and oil, because I was inspired to capture with paint the beauty, freshness, joy and love that radiate from each flower at its peak of blossoming. My series of paintings evolve from flowers, animals and people showing that THERE IS A RELATIONSHIP OF LOVE IN ALL CREATED THINGS.

I found a great opportunity to show my paintings and have a great chance to sell them online as well as offline. Most of my items to sell are prints and original art that I created in watercolor, oil and acrylic mediums. I want to reach the people who love flowers and enjoy the beauty of nature thru art.

My works have been published in different magazines, books, posters, and brochures of editorial, corporate and advertising publications. My client list, to name a few, are: American Management Association, At-A-Glance, AT&T, Avon Books, Beckman, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Chicago Tribune, Fannie Mae, John Hancock, HR Magazine, Management Review Magazine, MCI, Modern Maturity Magazine, Moneygram, Mr. Coffee, Network Computing Magazine, NTC / Contemporary Publishing, Oracle, Prentice Hall, Purdue Agicultures Magazine, Quantum Learning Inc., The House of Seagram, The Purdue Alumnus Magazine, Web Server Magazine, Your Money Magazine.

Awards Received (1984-2003) :

United Nations Stamp Design Award, Boli Award (Best of Long Island Award), Optima Design Award, Northwest Craftmen's Club Award, The Visual Club Award and New Jersey Press Association Award, University Of Santo Tomas College Of Fine Arts Venavides Award, St. Lorenzo Ruiz Painting Competition Award.

Sue Beyer

After working as a graphic designer for over 10 years, I felt that I could no longer work in that particular industry. This has changed the focus of my creativity from design to a fine art point of view. I am finding that my design skills and experience are providing a solid foundation for my fine arts practice.

The question that fascinates me in particular is how people utilise objects to define themselves, how people purchase to escape reality and the concept of affluenza.Through various methods and mediums I am exploring these ideas by looking at opposing concepts of the 'conscious/informed' and 'unconscious/naive' choice. I am currently a enrolled as a full-time student at Queensland College of Art in Brisbane.

Martha Marshall

I have been a working artist for more than 20 years. At first I painted while still employed in the corporate world and raising my family. I painted nights and week ends, every spare minute that I had, and showed my work in outdoor art festivals and group shows, winning a few awards as I went along.

Then in 1997 I was fortunate to be able to leave the daily rush hour, and spend full time at my first love, painting. I began to participate in more and more shows and art organizations, win more awards, gain increased recognition, and acquire representation by several galleries across the eastern United States.

My art business has now expanded in the direction of custom art work for the design trade.

Artist's Statement

Even when my paintings are nonobjective, they encompass aspects of atmosphere, moods, or places. Nature is often a beginning point for my primary fascination with the seemingly magical interactions of colors achieved by multiple layers of paint. I begin with large, bold strokes, and then continue to refine and build upon preceding layers of color, working toward a surface that both reveals and conceals what came before. My paintings are meant to be experienced more than analyzed. I feel that a successful painting invites the viewer to slow down, be fully present in the moment, and remain there for a little while.

I enjoy painting all subjects. To cause a viewer to pause and see the beauty in even a mundane object. My goal is to invite the viewer into the painting to explore the nuances and make discoveries...to participate. I must admit my special interest is animals of all sorts. While I did attend the Columbus College of Art And Design for one year, I am largely self taught. My main contemporary influences are Richard Schmid and Scott Burdick.

I'm a lifelong artist and I create daily paintings and conduct oil painting workshops. I paint in the Impressionist style and generally create landscapes outdoors on site (en plein air). I also paint in the studio as well, creating paintings of still life compositions, portraits, figure paintings and animals. My paintings have sold through top galleries for over 20 years and my work is in private and corporate collections like Sears, Standard Oil, and Coca Cola. For the past 5 years I have also been selling paintings on eBay that I intend to show on my blog as well.

Duncan Smith

I live in a small town in Tennessee a few miles south of Nashville. I spent the last 20 years of my working life running a small magazine publishing company. This gave me the opportunity to work with illustrators and graphic artists on a daily basis. Trying to manage these creative people to a deadline was like herding cats. I started painting about 10 years ago to see if it would make me eccentric like most of them were. It seems to be working.

I retired 5 years ago and got more serious about painting. I work mostly in pastels and oils. I still get a tremendous thrill when a painting works … when it says what I intended it to say. That doesn’t happen on all attempts but it does happen just often enough to keep me passionately dedicated to the process. Even when I’m not painting, I’m thinking about it. It has become one of the joys of my life.
