Duncan Smith

I live in a small town in Tennessee a few miles south of Nashville. I spent the last 20 years of my working life running a small magazine publishing company. This gave me the opportunity to work with illustrators and graphic artists on a daily basis. Trying to manage these creative people to a deadline was like herding cats. I started painting about 10 years ago to see if it would make me eccentric like most of them were. It seems to be working.

I retired 5 years ago and got more serious about painting. I work mostly in pastels and oils. I still get a tremendous thrill when a painting works … when it says what I intended it to say. That doesn’t happen on all attempts but it does happen just often enough to keep me passionately dedicated to the process. Even when I’m not painting, I’m thinking about it. It has become one of the joys of my life.
